Fraser, Andrea. “From the Critique of Institutions to an Institution of Critique.” Artforum. 2005.

Originally appeared in Artforum, volume 44, number 1 in September of 2005.

After spending much of the last week with my friend Jayson Scott Musson, known online as the brilliant and hilarious Hennessy Youngman, I’ve been thinking about this essay by Fraser from 2005. Musson was in town as a visiting artist at Pacific Northwest College of Art where I work and teach, and the turnout for his lecture had to have been at least 400 people. This obviously gets me thinking about the paradoxes of institutional critique, which Fraser addresses quite poignantly in this essay. When someone like Musson, whose rise to prominence resulted directly from blatantly critiquing the institution of a white art world, draws a very white crowd that rivaled numbers at previous lectures by James Turrell or Yvonee Rainer, what are we to think about the actual critiques he’s offered?

This isn’t intended as question regarding Musson’s own practice, but rather the larger implications of a system that absorbs its detractors and often times manufactures them into stars. Fraser, no stranger to this form of what Baudrillard called “operational negativity”, explores similar situations in her essay as she addresses the careers of artists like Daniel Buren, Michael Asher, and Hans Haacke, amongst others. What’s most interesting to me is that Fraser herself is often credited with inventing the term “institutional critique” and possesses a wry sense of humor about the irony of now taking issue with it. But what she’s arguing in her essay is quite sound and sober; the original methods used by those attempting to address the paradoxes of institutionalized art have become, in a sense, fully canonized. The fact that museums are wont to invite artists to stage institutional critiques in the form of exhibitions or “interventions” within their own structural facilities is oddly funny and terribly neutering.

Returning to Musson, he’s managed to cleverly employ the guise of an artist using institutional critique to work his way into an impressive emerging art career. In July of 2012, Musson had his first New York solo exhibition at the well-regarded Salon 94 Bowery, and he’s now represented by them. A younger generation of artists has indeed benefited from understanding the manner in which the systematic framework in place absorbs and repackages its anomalies. Three cheers to Musson, who has an MFA, for acting like an outsider in a way that the insiders just couldn’t resist.

My favorite passage:

That the art world, now a global multibillion-dollar industry, is not part of the “real world” is one of the most absurd fictions of art discourse. The current market boom, to mention only the most obvious example, is a direct product of neoliberal economic policies.
